American Cafe in Glen Cove, New York

August 7th, 2010
Tim Bailey asked:

A great restaurant in the Glen Cove area that is small and cozy is called American Caf?.?Just a block or so from the Glen Cove movie theater, it is a great place to go either before or after the movies.?Since the restaurant is a bit small with only 12 tables, there is sometimes a wait to have dinner especially on the weekend.

The d?cor is very nice with decorations of American art and crafts all over the walls. The wait staff always appears eager to serve with a small on their faces, which is very refreshing to the customer. ?The Caf? serves good quality food that is very filling and yet not too expensive.

There is a decent wine list with prices starting at five dollars per glass. ?For appetizers, you can order the New England corn and clam chowder, which is extremely creamy, but tasty.?The main courses are a list of what your grandmother may have made for you when you were growing up. ?Some of the favorites are chili, chicken pot pie, meatloaf and macaroni and cheese, which are all good types of comfort food.?

If you are looking for a lighter entr?e and possibly more healthy, American Caf? has turkey burgers, grilled salmon and various salads.?There are also other less healthy, standard items like hamburgers with a large mound of french fries.?To finish off your meal, the Caf? offers a nice selection of desserts, one of which is german chocolate cake covered with pecans, a very good choice.?Other good dessert options are bread pudding, chocolate cake and carrot cake.?

American Caf? is located on Five School Street in Glen Cove, NY.

Wine and Food Pairing

July 26th, 2010
Kathy Howe asked:

When only one variety of grapes is used to make a wine, the wine is called a varietal and is named after that grape. Regulations vary by location, but in California at least 75% of the juice in a wine must be of a particular grape in order for the wine to be labeled as a varietal.

TYPES OF WHITE WINES

Chardonnay

(Shar-doe-nay)

This popular dry white wine is more full bodied than other white wines. Chardonnay has aromas of fruits and acidity. The aroma typically has flavors of lemon or grapefruit. Fermentation in new oak barrels results in a rich, buttery taste often described as toastiness, vanilla, apple, nutty, or toffee. Chardonnays aged in French oak result in a milder flavor than those aged in American oak.

Food and Wine Pairing: Chardonnay goes well with chicken, seafood, and fish.

Origin: Chardonnay originated from the Burgundy area of France. There are many world-class Chardonnays being produced in California.

Sauvignon Blanc

(So-veen-yawn-blah)

Lighter than Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc usually has a grassy citrus aroma. Flavors range from apple, pear, green tea, limes and freshly mowed grass. You can often detect a little smokiness. California Sauvignon Blancs sometimes have a melon flavor. This is a crisp light wine with a strong acid finish. It is also called Fume Blanc.

American Sauvignon Blanc tends to be grassier than those produced in New Zealand.

Food and Wine Pairing: Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with salads, poultry, seafood, and cheese.

Origin: Sauvignon Blanc originated from the Sancerre region of France. Fabulous Sauvignon Blanc is currently being produced in New Zealand, South Africa, California, and Washington as well.

Food and Wine Pairing:Rieslings go well with chicken, fish, pork, and spicy foods.

Origin: Rieslings originate from Germany. Great Rieslings are also produced in New York, Washington, California, and Australia.

Gewurztraminer

(Gah-vurtz-tra-meener)

Gewurztraminer has a spicy aroma and fruity flavors of peach, apricot, tropical fruits, and lychee. It can be dry or sweet.

Food and Wine Pairing: Gewurztraminers go especially well with spicy Asian dishes and pork sausages.

Pinot Grigio is light and crispy with almond, lemon, and vanilla flavors. These wines are also called Pinot Gris.

Food and Wine Pairing: Pinot Grigio goes well with seafood and salmon.

Origin: Pinot Grigio originated in Burgandy long ago but is often considered an Italian wine. The grapes prefer a cold climate, which is why Oregon is able to produce delicious Pinot Grigio.

TYPES OF RED WINES

Cabernet Sauvignon

(Ca-burr-nay So-veen-yawn)

Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich full-bodied wine. Aged in oak, this is a complex wine with cassis and blackberry flavors as well as hints of bell pepper. To make these wines drinkable sooner they are often blended with other grapes. French Bordeaux is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Merlot to soften the tannins. When blended with Merlot and perhaps Cabernet Franc as well, this Bordeaux style blend is called Meritage in the United States.

Nutrtional Benefits of the Acai Berry

July 20th, 2010
David Medansky asked:

The Oprah Winfrey show lists the A?a? berry (pronounced a-sighee) as the world’s number one superfood for health and age defying beauty. Oprah’s website called A?a? “one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world…” While Dr. Nicholas Perricone in his book, The Perricone Promise, praised the A?a? fruit, stating, “Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes it nature’s perfect energy fruit.”

The A?a? Berry is a small, round, fruit about 25mm (1 inch) in diameter, with a dark-purple color. The A?a? berry grows on special Amazon palm trees in buched panicles of 700 to 900 berries. This high energy super food is harvested in the rainforests of Brazil twice a year.

The antioxidant strength of A?a? has been measured by a number of studies. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay, developed in 1992 at the National Institute of Aging measures how much a particular food inhibits the activity of free radicals. The test is now used by the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in extensive scientific research. A recent report using standardized testing on a freeze-dried A?a? powder showed a high antioxidant effect with an ORAC value of 1026; while the ORAC value for broccoli is 130, and for Spinach it is 150. A 2006 study in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry showed that extracts from the acai fruit triggered an apoptosis response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested.

It seems interesting that the A?a? berry, which has been used by ancient and modern inhabitants of the Amazon rainforest for centuries has never been heard of by most people. A?a? has a protein similar to eggs, has nearly 20 phytonutrients, has a monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat ratio nearly identical to olive oil, and a blood-sugar-friendly glycemic index. The American Diabetes Association lists Monavie (a blend of 19 fruits and berries with the A?a? berry beings its crown jewel) on their approved lists of foods.

In addition, the A?a? berry is packed with polyphenols (potent plant antioxidants) and boasts up to 30 times the anthocyanin content of red wine. Additionally, the A?a? berry is loaded with vitamins, and trace minerals including iron, copper and calcium.

It is considered by many experts that A?a? may help with energy deficiencies, immune problems, circulatory conditions, weight loss, lowering cholesterol and sexual dysfunctions as well as other ailments.

Restaurants in Blackpool

July 17th, 2010
Susan Ashby asked:

Part of the allure of a romantic visit to Blackpool is that there are dozens of impressive restaurants that exude just the right mood to enhance that fuzzy warm feeling. Here are some exquisite choices for that romantic lunch or dinner.

The September Brasserie on Queen Street is probably Blackpool’s most famous restaurant and a favorite haven of visiting politicians and celebrities. Under the able guidance of chef Michael Golowicz, the September Brasserie has been a permanent fixture in the Good Food Guide ever since it opened for business in 1990. They have set prices for two and three-course meals.

For a Las Vegas-flavoured restaurant, the White Tower on Ocean Boulevard is just the ticket. Located within Blackpool Pleasure Beach, White Tower gives diners an excellent view of the promenade as they enjoy modern British cuisine.

Kwizeen on King Street is relatively new but has already developed a sterling reputation for its excellent cuisine, highlighted by traditional Lancashire dishes and seafood. It is ideal for a quiet dinner for two.

The Warehouse is a bit out of the way, tucked into a small alley called Back Church Street, but it offers an intimate and elegant setting for dinner.

AJ’s Bistro on Topping Street is a superb small eatery that exudes plenty of flair and serves only the finest food with the freshest ingredients. Chief Andrew Reeds has been dishing them out for over 20 years and isn’t afraid to let his imagination run wild.

For a truly spectacular meal, head out to Twelve at the Marsh Mill Village beside the historic windmill. It may be out of the way in Thornton, just outside of central Blackpool, but the food here is truly a gourmet delight and highly recommended by Bib Gourmand. A former dance studio, Twelve serves traditional food with a modern twist.

For a taste of something different, Blackpool also has a host of restaurants that offer Chinese, Italian, Indian, Thai and even Afro-Carribean cuisine.

The Magic Lantern on Coronation Street is an excellent venue for authentic Chinese food. Another favourite among tourists is the Mandarin Cantonese Restaurant on Clifton Street. They have been serving Oriental cuisine for over 40 years and have captured several Gold Awards for serving the best food in the North West.

The Payathai Restaurant on St. Anne’s Road is the place to visit for Thai food. This enchanting place features its very own waterfall, topped by a wooden bridge, while the staff are dressed in traditional Thai garments.

Central Blackpool boasts many curry houses for lovers of spicy Indian food. The most popular are Terry’s Balti House on Clifton Street and Spice of India on Queen Street.

For exquisite Greek cuisine, head to Giggis Tavern on Church Street and expect a lot of delicious food and the traditional smashing of plates.

La Fontana Restaurant on Clifton Street is the most popular Italian Restaurant in Blackpool and the venue of choice for pizza and pasta lovers.

Party lovers will appreciate Lagoonda on Queen Street, where the atmosphere is jumping and the cuisine is unique. There’s no other place for superb Afro-Caribbean dishes like fruity curry and jerk pork.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach also has its share of excellent dining venues. If American food and Tex-Mex dishes are what your heart desires, then there’s no better place than Coasters American Diner.

Any visit to Blackpool would not be complete if you don’t sample the seafood offerings of the locals such as chunky chips and fine battered haddock or upmarket delights such as shark steaks, king prawns and oysters. There are many great seafood restaurants around.
The Golden Mile features dozens of fish restaurants. One of the best of the lot is the world-famous Harry Ramsden’s restaurant on central Promenade. Here’s where you will find the very best fish and chips in all of Blackpool. It’s a tourist favorite all throughout the year.

The Seniors Fish Bar and Restaurant on Normoss Road is another multi-award winning restaurant. Their menu includes a wide array of seafood dishes as well as non-seafood and vegetarian offerings. Seniors was hailed as the resort’s best restaurant during the Blackpool Tourism Awards in 2001. It also ranked among the Top Ten of the Fish and Chip Shop survey in an independent newspaper in 2002.

Within Blackpool Pleasure Beach, there’s The Fish Inn on Ocean Boulevard, a venue renowned for its excellent battered cod and shark steaks as well as for a number of imaginative and adventurous seafood dishes. Nearby, you will find Thor’s Place, a restaurant that looks like a Viking shop and specializes in traditional British fish and chips.

The Cottage on Newhouse Road is a popular venue among tourists and locals alike, as well as among visiting celebrities. Their cod, halibut, haddock, hake and plaice are absolutely superb.

The Seafood Restaurant on Bond Street is a classic and stylish venue as well as a particular favorite of politicians who regularly converge here when party conference season comes around. They offer the very best shellfish, oysters, lobsters and traditional fish classics as well as a wide array of steaks, grills and chicken dishes.

The 130-year-old Robert’s Oyster Bar on the Promenade is another popular venue for cockles, oysters and mussels.

Pinones – Healthy, Tasty, American Treat

June 22nd, 2010
Robert Rister asked:

Pinones are the nuts of the pinon pine tree. Not the same as the stone pine nuts produced in Italy, China, and Spain, American pine nuts are harvested by hand every September and October in the northern New Mexico woodlands.

Once they are shelled and then roasted, pi?on nuts make a tasty addition to candies, cookies, salads, sauces, and pesto, or they can be eaten as snack, especially, in New Mexico, as Christmastime snack food. These tiny nuts add New Mexican accent to winter cooking with their sweet and occasionally resinous flavor.

Pi?ones are produced mainly in southern Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado from locally native stone pine (pi?on means pine) trees. Their shell is exceptionally hard to crack, making the nuts are usually expensive. They sell retail for about US $9 a pound ($20/kg).

Both European and Native American folk medicine have long used stone pine nuts as a folk remedy for nervous disturbances, tuberculosis, bladder infections, and upset stomach. Pine nuts are richer in protein than most other nuts, and the softer-shell varieties contain more primary amino acids (tryptophan, lysine, methionine) than equal weights of milk or beef. A 3-1/2 oz (100 g) serving of pine nuts provides a week’s supply of iodine, manganese, copper, zinc, and cobalt, and it is a good source of vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin. Like most nuts, pine nuts are a good source of heart-healthy alpha-linolenic acid.

Eat pi?on pine nuts raw or roasted. You can roast any kind of pine nut in a 350?F (180?C) oven or in a dry pan on top of the stove (tossing regularly) until golden brown. Be sure to roast be using in a pesto recipe.

American Express Credit Cards – Are They Right For You?

June 22nd, 2010
Lindsey Rowley asked:

American Express credit cards have then in existence dating back to the 1950′s. The financial institution is every bit as well known as Visa and MasterCard, nonetheless it isn’t as extensively accepted compared to the aforementioned two businesses. It appears as if Amex credit cards tend to be more popular overseas than in the U.S..

There are several different reasons for this, nevertheless, you really should keep this factor in mind if you happen to be thinking of an AMEX charge card.

As with all your other financial institutions, there is an application form to move through before acquiring an American Express credit card. The majority of people trying to get a charge card through Amex have said that it can be a relatively tough provider to get okayed with.

They are going to, of course, consider your credit report, present-day credit score, employment status, as well as your debt to income ratio to find out whether or not you are financially responsible, and if you happen to be, what’s your credit limit.

American Express credit cards offer you a wealth of choices as far as rewards incentives are concerned. They have travel, gas, food, and general goods and services perks which will help you get cashback and bonus points which can be exchanged for assorted items.

The allotment pertaining to cash back are typically higher, and the bonus points system provides a lower exchange rate for merchandise. This ability to provide these kind of more desirable bonus deals comes with a cost, however.

American Express charges a larger transaction price each time you use your Amex card at any website or offline store which accepts the card. It might be one full pct greater than your cost as compared to Visa, Discover, and other providers charge.

In addition, Amex is able to keep the complete transaction charge, because the other issuers that have to share along with the bank or provider that you actually acquired your personal card account from. The more expensive expenses is often bad for the retailer, especially in relation to large expenditures. That’s the reason numerous firms prefer not to take AMEX cards.

All in all, American Express credit cards provide several added benefits which will reward account holders to a greater degree than various bank card providers. Alternatively, to qualify for these incentives might mean enjoying a fewer amount of locations for where the credit card will be accepted.

One must always account for the locations you will be making use of the plastic, because if many vendors don’t take the credit card, you can’t harvest the bonus points. In addition, you will need to have a solid credit rating along with other personal details that allows you to be granted credit with this company.

American Bulldog – The facts every owner of this dog breed should know

June 17th, 2010
Robert Benjamin asked:

Descended from the English Bulldog, the American Bulldog was nearly extinct after World War II. Thanks to the efforts of John D. Summerville, this breed has returned from the edge of extinction and flourished in America. This working dog has been described as fiercely loyal, an excellent hunter, and wonderful family pet. In fact, some American Bulldogs are known for their extraordinary acts of bravery and courage when defending their masters.

There are two types of American Bulldog: Classic (also known as Johnson or Bully) and Standard (also known as Scott or Performance); however, many of today’s American Bulldogs tend to be a combination of both. Standards tend to be shorter and stockier, causing them to sometimes be mistaken for their cousin the Pit Bull, but otherwise Classic and Standard American Bulldogs look similar to one another. American Bulldogs are primarily white though some may have patches of brindle or red. Their coats are short and wiry, feeling bristly and rough to the touch. American Bulldogs require relatively little maintenance thanks to this short coat, and only need the occasional bath and regular brushing with a stiff bristle brush. Their strong jaws give their heads a boxy and strong-looking appearance.

Male American Bulldogs will reach an average height of 22 to 27 inches and average weight of 75 to 125 pounds. Females will reach average heights of 20 to 25 inches and weights of 60 to 100 pounds. American Bulldogs will live, on average, 16 years. English Bulldogs were bred as working dogs that helped herd cattle and the American Bulldog retains some of these characteristics, particularly the strong jaw and equally strong personality. Though American Bulldogs are known as fierce protectors of their properties and masters (making them excellent guard and watch dogs), they are very gentle and good with both children and other family pets.

However, an American Bulldog is sometimes unaware of its own strength and for this reason, children should always be closely supervised when playing with this breed. In general, American Bulldogs can be difficult to train, as they are stubborn, but once consistently trained, will obey. American Bulldogs are suited for apartment life, as they tend to be relatively inactive indoors. However, they should be exercised at least once a day. Some American Bulldogs are prone to hip displaysia, but otherwise, are a healthy breed of dog.

There is a website that has great information on American Bulldogs and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

The Jollibee Legacy

June 3rd, 2010
Christine B. Layug asked:

When it comes to fast food chains here in the Philippines, the Jollibee Food Corporation is among of the best that can sate every Filipino’s hunger for American and Philippine cuisine. The Jollibee Food Corporation is an American-style fast-food restaurant with Filipino-influenced dishes specializing in chicken, burgers, spaghetti and some local Filipino dishes.

Today, the Jollibee Food Corporation is currently the biggest fast-food restaurant in the Philippines. Jollibee Food Corporation also extends its popularity on among of the biggest countries such as the United States, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Dubai and Brunei.

As of December 2007, Jollibee has become one of the biggest fast-food chains in the world with 1,635 stores worldwide and total sales of more than $1 billion. As of February, 2008, Jollibee Food Corporation has 1,385 stores in the Philippines namely, Jollibee which has 625 stores, Chowking which has 376 stores, Greenwich Pizza which has 237 stores, Red Ribbon Bakeshop which has 192 stores, D?lifrance which has 27 stores and Tio Pepe which has 2 stores. It had 186 stores overseas.

All of this has happened through the time when we first ate at a nearby Jollibee store. But have you ever asked where all of this success started? Well here is a little trip down memory lane of a man that never knew his business will grow to be the biggest fast food chain of all time, the Jollibee Food Corporation.

Tony Tan Caktiong and his family opened a Magnolia Ice Cream parlor at Cubao in 1975 with Jolibe as the original name. Sometime in 1978, Tony Tan Caktiong and his brothers and sisters, being partners, engaged the services of a management consultant in the person of Manuel C. Lumba. Lumba, now Caktiong’s personal consultant, shifted the business focus from ice cream to hamburgers, after his studies showed that a much larger market was waiting to be exploited.

Lumba next re-formed the name Jolibe to Jolly Bee and made the two words form a single name Jollibee, but changed the “y” to an “i” Lumba next created the product name “Yumburger” as well as the name “Chickenjoy”.

Lumba also formulated a long-term marketing strategy, listing up a number of consumer promotions and traffic building schemes. Tony Tan stressed that developing internal strengths was critical. The stores were re-designed, the service transformed into a full self-service, fast-food operation with drive thrus.
Not long after, Tony Tan and Manny Lumba went on an observation tour in the United States, attended food service and equipment conventions. Tony Tan placed Manny Lumba in charge of franchise development. Thus creating the Jollibee Food Corporation.

Tips on How to Save on Big Purchases

June 1st, 2010
David Stack asked:

There are times that we need some new equipment for gardening, a much-needed appliance for our kitchen, get a second car, purchase a motorcycle, get a new home entertainment system or just generally want to have huge stash of cash to save up ahead for a big purchase. How can we get saving for that when we have all these bills we need to pay?

First of all, is to think and have a clear plan on what and how you want to achieve your big purchase. Look at the price up front and scrutinize the amount and how will you able to afford it in a given time span. Research about that item, look into getting it in bargain price so be ready to look for alternatives and lower prices. Then look at your savings and think about getting some money from there to start your funds. How much more will you be able to put away regularly for that specific saving? How many months will it take you until you meet the goal? Will you need a loan for that? Is it prudent to use a credit card?

You can open an online savings account. It’s very much recommended that you choose an online account because not only does it keeps your money fairly liquid and accessible, and it which helps you grow your money with its high interest rate. It requires a tighter budget than usual, and requires discipline to ensure that you meet the goal on time.

The lesser the time you have to save, you’re going to put away a higher amount. The more you throw in your saving the lesser time you have to for your big purchase. So to try and fix your budget, try to earn more and spend less. You can sell or auction some items lying around your house that you don’t need anymore. Take the profits from that and put it in your online account. Try to earn more through part-time jobs to have a supplementary income, or try to ask if you can put in more overtime hours in your place of work. Do cut back on your variable expenses, including the budget for entertainment and dining out on weekends. Make a supreme effort in lowering your grocery items the next time you go grocery shopping and try to lower your utilities bills as well.

The usual method would be to loan some money to fund this purchase or use a credit card to charge it. With the recent downturn in our financial industry, this can’t be considered as a prudent choice. Loans will just hit you where it hurts and will burden you in the long run, and you will end up paying interest upon interests and possibly incur late fees as well. In these times, it’s crucial that you stay away from any debt or stop making decisions that lead you to sink deeper into debt. Save, wait, and stick to prudent choices when saving money!
